Visiting With Your Dog
Located on Five Mile Road in Tacoma, this waterfront park is an absolute gem for anyone looking to give their pup a fantastic day out. When you arrive, you'll find plenty of parking right at the entrance, which is convenient—especially on weekends when it gets busier. I'd recommend heading out on weekday mornings or early afternoons if you want a more relaxed experience with fewer dogs, though the weekend crowds are generally friendly and well-behaved.
The off-leash area is generous and well-maintained, giving dogs plenty of room to burn energy while you can actually supervise them properly. What really sets this place apart is the combination of open fields and scenic trails winding through the property. My dog loves splashing around near the water, and the fact that it's right on the waterfront makes it especially refreshing during warmer months. Just bring a towel for the drive home!
Pack water and a collapsible bowl—dehydration sneaks up on active dogs fast. I also bring waste bags (always bring more than you think you'll need) and maybe some treats for positive reinforcement, especially if your dog is still learning recall in off-leash settings.
What I love most is how this visit flows into the rest of Tacoma's scene. After an hour or so of running around, I'll head over to nearby Curran Coffee or Common Ground Coffee with my pup relaxed and happy beside me. Many of these cafes have outdoor seating where dogs can rest while you grab a coffee and watch the water. It's the perfect half-day adventure—exercise first, then a more mellow social component.
Bring a leash even though you won't need it in the off-leash area, just for safety and transitions. The trails are excellent for more controlled walks if you want variety during your visit. Whether your dog is a seasoned park regular or just getting comfortable around other dogs, Point Defiance offers something for every pup's personality.
