Visiting With Your Dog
There's nothing quite like settling onto the patio at Budd Bay Cafe with a perfectly crafted latte while your pup relaxes at your feet. Located at 525 Columbia Street NW in downtown Olympia, this spot has become a favorite hangout for locals who want to enjoy quality coffee without leaving their four-legged companions behind.
When you arrive, expect a warm welcome from the baristas—they clearly love seeing dogs and often have treats on hand. The patio is spacious enough that you won't feel cramped, even when it's busy, and there's plenty of shade from nearby structures. Arrive early on weekends if you want prime seating, as the place fills up quickly with the laptop crowd and other pup parents. Weekday mornings tend to be more relaxed if you're looking for a quieter experience.
Parking is conveniently available along Columbia Street or in the nearby lots, so you won't need to circle endlessly. Bring a collapsible water bowl to keep your dog hydrated, especially on warmer days—while the cafe doesn't have water stations specifically set out, the staff is usually happy to help if you ask. A portable dog bed or blanket can also make your pup more comfortable on the concrete patio.
Budd Bay works perfectly as a starting point for a larger adventure. After your coffee, you're just minutes away from Squaxin Park Trailhead, where you can stretch both your legs and your dog's. If you're looking for something more extensive, Tolmie State Park offers beautiful trails through old-growth forest with plenty of room for a proper walk. Many mornings, I'll grab my usual cappuccino here, spend an hour or so on the patio catching up with other dog owners, then head over to one of the nearby parks for some exercise.
The espresso drinks are consistently excellent, the pastries are genuinely delicious, and the atmosphere is genuinely welcoming to dogs. It's become my go-to spot when I want to combine caffeine, community, and quality time with my dog—all in one stop.
